Want to Lose Weight and Keep it Off, Here’s How!!

Stop Dieting
Stop Dieting

The truth is, most of us make losing weight too complicated. It doesn’t need to be. Let’s remove the walls and get you on your way to success. Listed below are the pitfalls most people make when trying to lose weight.

Doing anything temporally will give you temporary results! You have to get this, dieting is a temporary act and therefore it doesn’t provide long-term weight loss.

  1. Change your diet gradually. Many people jump right in and totally change their diet to the extreme. They go from the typical American diet rich in processed foods to a very restrictive diet. Any time you make sudden change in your diet and lifestyle you highly increase your risk of failure. Make the change slowly. Instead of taking foods away try adding healthy foods to your diet. You will begin to crowd out the harmful foods with healthy foods.  You can do this by adding an additional vegetable to your daily diet for 1 week.  The next week, add another one and then on week 3 add an extra fruit. On week 4 add another vegetable to your daily diet. By week 4 you have increased your vegetable intake by 3 servings per day and fruit intake by 1 serving per day. Can you see, we haven’t asked you to remove any foods, only to add healthy foods? This really works if you apply it. The aim is to slowly replace processed and refined foods with healthy vegetables, fruits, beans, lentils, nuts and seeds and a small amount of whole grains daily.
  2. Stop Stressing about life and losing the weight.  Because we make it so complicated we get overly stressed. Chronic stress causes our bodies to release higher amounts of cortisol everyday, which is a fat building hormone. There is an association between stress and the appetite increasing hormone ghrelin. If you have stress from work or home you need to manage it or remove the source. Stress will make it almost impossible to lose much weight. In addition stress kills by increasing the risk of heart disease, cardiovascular disease, hormonal imbalances and gastric diseases.
  3. Eat enough calories. Many people begin by drastically cutting food intake thus calories too much. If you go below 1200 calories for more than a few days your body senses a famine has arrived, it lowers your metabolic rate to conserve energy. You can even gain weight if you cut calories too much. If you stay in a severe calorie reduction under (800 calories or less, like anorexia) you body shifts to the catabolic effect of starvation and your body will begin to consume muscle and organs for its nutrition needs. The fact is, if you eat a mostly plant-based diet you would never need to worry about eating to many calories.
  4. Get your protein! Protein is important for building a healthy body and much more. But to much protein means you are ignoring foods that we also need like heart healthy fats and complex carbohydrates. Use this formula to determine your protein needs. The DRI for protein intake under normal bodily demand would be .8 grams of protein for each kg of body weight. To figure your body weight in kilograms, divide your weight in pounds by 2.2, that number is your weight converted from pounds to kilograms. For the obese the protein intake would be .8 grams for every kg of muscle massFor an athlete with heavy demands on muscle performance such as a body builder or an Olympic athlete the intake would be 1.6 to 1.7 grams of protein per kg of body weight meaning that same 200 pound man would consume 145 grams of protein at the high-end. An endurance athlete such as those running marathons, iron man events and triathlons requires less because they are not placing as much stress on the major muscle groups. Their needs can be met in most cases with no more than 1.2 to 1.4 grams of protein per kg of body weight. The average person who works out in the gym and is very active hiking and playing organized sports does not need this level of protein intake.
  5. Do Not Skip Meals! You need to eat at least 5 times per day. It keeps blood sugar balanced and energy available. It also keeps the metabolism boosted. A healthy meal replacement shake is an option and can serve your body well. I recommend Vive, it was created for weight loss and energy and is packed with an abundance of nutrition!
  6. Keep a Food Journal. Studies show us that people keeping a food journal for at least 3 months tend to lose weight and keep it off. It keeps you aware of what you are eating, when and how much. It’s easy to do and there are several online resources with good free food journal systems. Try www.myfitnesspal.com
  7. Drink plenty of water. Many people will not drink enough water. It takes water to release and burn fat for energy. Water is so important for your health! You need at least 1/2 your body weight in fluid ounces daily. If you sweat a lot you need even more.
  8. Exercise. If you are overweight or obese you can lose weight for a short time by just cutting calories, however that will eventually slow and then stop. You must move more. Exercise does many wonderful things for our body. One benefit is that it speeds up our metabolic rate causing us to burn more calories through out the day! It builds muscles, improves balance, and improves immune function and much more. Just walking is a great exercise. Increase your speed and time as your fitness and health improves. I am an advocate of exercising multiple times per day. As an example; I would walk for 30 minutes in the morning, 30 minutes in the afternoon and 30 minutes before or after dinner. You can split it up however you wish, just do it. To loss weight most of your exercise should be a form of cardio exercise like walking or cycling. You should also do weight bearing exercises to build more muscle. Muscles burn more fat. For good results you need to exercise at least 1 hour per day, 5 days per week. Before beginning any exercise program please consult with your doctor for their approval. Walk twice per day to speed up the weight loss!
  9. Stop weighing everyday! Your weight can change, up or down five or more pounds in any given day. You will set your self up for disappointment by weighing everyday. Weigh your self every two weeks. Do it first thing in the morning immediately after waking up and after your first pee.
  10. Stop beating your self up! No body is perfect. Treats are allowed, even unscheduled ones. If you have a treat, the next time you eat make a healthy choice. Bashing yourself will make you eat more.
  11. DO NOT DIET!  It is our mindset to use the word diet and when we do we automatically set up in our mind that we will change our diet and lifestyle for a period of time and then come back home to that addictive food that got us fat to begin with. Plus, because you have starved your body (both calories and nutrients) in the past, your body senses this and begins to subconsciously increase your desire for fatty and sugary foods. Sure, you can lose 30 pounds and then you gain 50 back. Dieting will only make you fatter one diet at a time! Think lifestyle change!
  12. Sleep is Critical! If you are like most Americans you get less than 7 hours of sleep nightly. This can disrupt hormonal balances, reduce immune function, and reduce your energy levels, lower mental concentration and much more. When you sleep, your body is busy repairing tissues, making hormones, enzymes, red blood cells, white blood cells, antibodies, cellular antioxidants like Coenzyme -Q10 which is very important for energy production in the cell and heart health, Glutathione peroxidase and Superoxide Dismutase (SOD) which are your cells most powerful defenders from internal and foreign invaders and other neurotransmitters necessary for good mental and emotional health.
  13. Nutrition Nutrition Nutrition!!!!  The more plant based foods you can eat the healthier you can be. When your body is getting loads of nutrients it begins to clean and detox the body at the cellular level getting rid of toxic materials you have stored for years. Your body does not like to let go of stored fat unless it can detox adequately because your body stores many toxins in your fat. When depleted nutrient stores in your body get filled up and topped off by a nutrient rich diet, the bodies systems begin to come back into harmony with one another. Blood sugar begins to balance, cravings begin to disappear, energy improves, thinking improves, your hair and skin begins to glow, you have less infections and you sleep better. With great nutrition your body starts regenerating itself cell by cell into a new healthy and vibrant body.
  14. Get the excessive sugars out of your diet! Sugars from sources other than foods such as high fructose corn syrup, corn syrup, fructose, maltose, powdered sugar etc. cause a fast surge in blood sugars levels. This increases inflammation in your arteries, damages nerves and forces the hormone insulin to store the sugar as fat. It also increases cravings and disrupts the hormonal system and the immune system. Flour from grains causes the same problem. Avoid grain flours unless they are from sprouted grains like that from Ezekiel bread. Flour from grains are found in breads, gravies, cookies, crackers and pastries. Avoid white potato’s and white rice.

The bottom line is that weight loss and health do not come from a “diet” they come from living a healthy lifestyle. That’s it. Adopt a healthy lifestyle and watch your body change!

Love Your Heart So It Can Love Even More!

Heart in handsThe lifestyle you live has the biggest impact on your heart health. Even if heart disease runs in your family you can trump those genetics by adopting a heart healthy lifestyle!

First know that cholesterol is not the enemy, your body actually makes 800 to 1500 mgs of cholesterol daily! Your hearts enemies are foods that cause systemic inflammation in your arteries forcing cholesterol to be used to patch and repair vascular sores. These foods are prevalent in the American diet.

What you are about to read should make you run in your kitchen and fire up a salad, smoothie or Vive. Did you know that a plant-based diet has been shown to significantly reduce the risk of and even reverse heart and cardiovascular disease?  You can listen to Dr. Dean Ornish and some of his patients at this link. http://www.youtube.com/user/DrDeanOrnish

Many factors can affect our heart health. Our diet (excessive simple sugars), stress, and other lifestyle factors like smoking and the amount of physical activity we get play a huge role in heart health.

In about a day your heart beats 100,000 times pumping around 2000 gallons of blood to 100 trillion cells through 60 thousand miles of blood vessels.  Every time I  think of that it amazes me!

The heart is not just an organ, it is also a muscle.  The heart requires a lot of energy and quality nutrition to keep it healthy.  Your heart is a very unique organ and unlike other organs and muscles, it does not become fatigued. It only stops when oxygen is no longer available.

Exercise increases the hearts fitness so it can deliver more oxygen and nutrients throughout the body. Develop a good exercise program after approval from your doctor!

Because of the great energy requirements put on the heart, nutrition is very important.  Vitamins, minerals, essential fatty acids, enzymes and antioxidants are super important for heart health.

  • Plant based foods provide a bounty of nutrients and antioxidants the body needs for great heart health.
  • Studies show Nuts and seeds consumed daily reduce the risk for heart disease. They are anti-inflammatory and a good source of Vitamin E, which, is very important for cell membrane health and is also an antioxidant.
  • Omega 3’s from Salmon, sardines, ground flax seed and walnuts reduce inflammation and keep blood platelets from sticking, reducing the risk for cardiovascular disease
  • Antioxidants in fruits and vegetables reduce inflammation and protect the heart from free radical damage.  The greater the volume of oxygen is needed in a cell to make energy, the higher the potential for free radical damage.  The heart is a big air and fluid pump.  So antioxidants are even more important for the heart muscle.
  • Magnesium is very important for heart health because it helps blood vessels relax, potentially reducing blood pressure, which, if high, can damage the heart.
  • B Vitamins are critical for preparing foods for the conversion to energy.
  • B12, Folate and B6 are critical to reduce the protein homocysteine from accumulating in our tissues. Homocysteine causes cellular damage to the heart and blood vessels and heavily associated with heart disease.
  • Iron, B12, Vitamin C and Folate are important to make healthy red blood cells and blood vessels.
  • Vitamin E from food and Co-Q10 from foods are important heart protectors.

Some of the best foods for heart health are:

  • Nuts and seeds (walnuts, almonds, pumpkin seeds, sunflower seeds, pecans)
  • Avocado
  • Dark chocolate
  • Leafy greens (spinach, kale, collards, mustard greens, turnip greens)
  • Asparagus
  • Broccoli
  • Brussel sprouts
  • Carrots
  • Cauliflower
  • Bananas
  • Bell peppers
  • Hot peppers
  • Tomatoes
  • Beans (pinto, garbanzo, black)
  • Lentils
  • Pomegranate
  • Blueberries
  • Goji Berries
  • Strawberries
  • Raspberries
  • Salmon
  • Sweet Potatoes
  • Amaranth
  • Buckwheat
  • Oats
  • Quinoa
  • Wild rice

Heart Health Destroyers

Sadly the American diet is the perfect diet if you want poor heart health. It is rich in sodium, sugar and bad fats and low in nutrient rich foods like vegetables, fruits, beans, nuts and seeds and whole grains, which promote health.

If you love your heart it would be best to avoid or limit these foods in your diet. These foods are health destroyers!

  • Foods high in saturated fats and cholesterol (meats, processed meats, eggs, cows milk and cheese)
  • Processed meats
  • Foods high in sodium
  • Foods high in sugars particularly added sugars such as (refined sugar, corn syrup, high fructose corn syrup, confectioners sugar, brown sugar etc..)
  • Fried foods
  • Flour based foods (includes breading on fried foods, cookies, crackers, cereals, pastries, breads, pasta) Flour can turn to blood sugar as quickly as table sugar.
  • Excess sugar is a powerful risk factor in your diet because it creates inflammation and sores in your arteries, which forces your body to use cholesterol to repair them. This makes arteries stiffer creating more sores or tears requiring more cholesterol.  It’s a vicious cycle that accelerates heart and vascular disease, diabetes, high blood pressure and obesity.

Other Heart Health Factors

  • Stress is a killer! It creates hormonal changes that raise blood pressure, cause obesity and eventually damage your heart.
  • A lack of exercise let’s muscles atrophy, becoming weaker. Your heart and blood vessels are muscles and need exercise to be in top health.
  • A lack of sleep creates systemic stress putting additional stress on your heart.
  • Cigarettes destroy your blood vessels and lungs. Both are critical for your heart to be healthy.
  • Limit alcohol to no more than 3 drinks per week.

Summary

Having 2 smoothies a day filled with every color of vegetable and fruit, nuts and seeds is going to get you on the right track for great heart health.

  • Have Vive twice per day to make sure you are getting the heart healthy nutrients you need. You can add Vive to smoothies and make them even better!
  • Avoid added sugars; the healthiest sweeteners are stevia and raw honey.
  • Reduce your intake of animal fats
  • Make your diet mostly vegetables, fruits, beans and nuts and seeds and limited low glycemic whole grains
  • Exercise daily
  • De-stress by exercising, enjoying friends and laughing!
  • Reduce your salt intake to 1300 mgs per day to reduce blood pressure.
  • Drink plenty of clean water
  • Get at least 7 to 8 hours of sleep nightly

Happy healthy eating!

Getiing Your Body Back to Normal After the Thanksgiving Day Indulgence!

Oh I ate too much!
Oh I ate too much!

I still smell the pumpkin pie and turkey! I love this time of year. It rings of comforting nostalgia, the crisp air, Pumpkin pie, apple cider and cinnamon, can you smell it? I can close my eyes and think back to being 8 years old in moms kitchen and the aroma of pumpkin pie and sweet potato souffle make me smile, it just makes me feel good regardless what kind of life I am having. I also think the act of kindness and charity at this time of year seems to give a greater meaning to life. It’s not all about me, it’s about us.  There is much to be grateful for.

Some people don’t over do it and find way to have  a healthier Thanksgiving Day meal. This is just one day or at most one weekend of a change to your normal healthy (hope you are eating healthy) dietary routine. Don’t get all worried about it. Enjoy it, try not to over do too much and get back to normal as soon as you are able.

However, if you feel like your body is sluggish and you over did the food this is a great way to get  your body back to form and feeling better.

For many of us, the Thanksgiving week-end is a detour to our bodies normally dietary intake. We end up eating a lot of foods that pollute our bodies. Regardless how hard you try you must give in a little to those sumptuous tasting yet not very healthy foods,  it’s Thanksgiving after all. After three or four days of eating a few of the normally avoided foods my body is rebelling and I feel bloated and heavy and I can’t wait to get back to a clean body.  Frankly, by the time Sunday arrives I have had enough and my body is in shock from all the calories, simple carbohydrates and excessive protein. For those of you that eat fairly healthy and would like to get your body back to normal as quick as possible try this short and simple approach.  If you don’t eat healthy this would be a good way to start.

This is not intended to be a total body cleanse. If you have been eating a poor diet for a long time you will need to do a different and more intense cleanse,  however that type of cleanse should only be done under the supervision of a qualified health professional.

The question is, how do we get our bodies back to normal as quick as possible after the holiday? It’s fairly simple. We need to aid our body in cleansing out the junk through a light diet and exercise. The diet will help in the cleanse and exercise will get our lymphatic system moving the junk out. The lymphatic system is part of our cellular waste and toxic material removal system. It relies totally of the movement of our muscles to pump our lymphatic fluid throughout our body. Unlike our circulatory system that depends on our heart, our skeletal  muscles do the job for the lymphatic system. For example; when your arms and leg muscles contract, they squeeze the lymphatic fluid through the lymphatic system. The body is so amazing.

An infrared  sauna can also help remove toxins through your sweat.

Suggested Dietary Changes for 3 days

Day 1 Healthy Liquids Only  (Vive!™ ,cleansing lemonade, warm green tea)

Day 2 Healthy Liquids and select vegetables and fruits only

Day 3 Healthy Liquids, select vegetables, fruits and a few cooked vegetables.

Day 4  Slowly add other healthy whole grains, beans and nuts and seeds back to your diet.

Recipe; Cleaning Lemonade  ( taste very good, you can drink this everyday if you wanted to)

  • 110 ounces of purified water or spring water
  • 1 to 1.5 cups fresh squeezed lemon juice  ( I use the juice and pulp from 7 lemons )
  • 6 ounces of Bragg’s apple cider vinegar
  • 1 cup raw honey
  • optional- 4 ounces of blackstrap molasses (this is optional) add to mix if exercising or sweating from working out or exercising
  • Stevia and/or xylitol as sweetener, sweeten to your taste preference

Warm Green Tea (if you can get Matcha tea it is even better!)

My Cleansing Routine

Day 1

On Monday I will start a liquid only diet for 24 hours. The contents for my day are; Vive!™ , the cleansing lemonade and warm green tea. My diet will consist of 2 scoops of my Vive!™ with 12 ounces of water 3 times that day, 40 ounces of cleansing lemonade, consumed throughout the day and 24 ounces of warm green tea.  It does not matter when you drink the lemonade or green tea. The Vive!™ is taken at breakfast, lunch, late afternoon and early evening, no later than 7:00PM.

Exercise for 45 minutes to 1 hour, work up a good sweat. If you can only walk for 5 minutes, walk for five minutes 2 or 3 times every day and slowly build up your time till you can walk comfortably for 30 minutes at a time. Only exercise if you have your doctors OK.

Day 2

On Tuesday I will cut the Vive!™ intake to 2 times that day, will continue the cleansing lemonade and will add raw vegetables and fruit to my diet.  Continue to exercise and sweat.  If you have a NutriBullet put it to use making smoothies with veggies and low sugar fruits.

Breakfast is 1 Vive!™ shake

Mid morning snack will be a small to medium apple with almond butter.

Lunch, I will have a salad with spinach, romaine lettuce, orange bell pepper, carrots, zucchini squash, onion, radishes, broccoli, cauliflower, cherry tomatoes, and portabello or crimini mushrooms. Dressing will be balsamic vinegar and olive oil. You can add spices of your choice. If you prefer put it in the NutriBullet for a smoothie!

I eat a salad at least 5 days per week and some days I will have one at lunch and dinner! A salad is hard to beat for building health as long as you do not use unhealthy dressings.  A dressing high in sugar content or those that contain high fructose corn syrup can neutralize some of the health benefits that a salad provides. Using too much salad dressing, even a healthy one can sabotage the benefits from lower calories a salad naturally offers. Also look for salad dressings using olive oil in place of soy or other vegetable oils. They are healthier.

Mid afternoon I will have another Vive!™ drink.

Dinner, I will have another salad.

Mid evening  snack; a smoothie with 1/2 cup frozen strawberries, 1/2 cup frozen blueberries with 1 to 2 cups cup almond milk and stevia for extra sweetness. Blend and enjoy

Day 3

Vive!™ is consumed twice per day on going. I will continue drinking the cleansing lemonade ongoing, I like it.

I will add back a little cooked food to my diet. Cooked food is optional. There are many days I do not eat any cooked food. The schedule is the same as day 2 except for dinner. You can switch lunch and dinner at any time. Many people say it is best to eat your heaviest meals at mid day. I grew up eating my largest meal at dinner and most of the time I have continued that tradition.  It is best not to eat at least 2 hours before bed time.

Dinner;  steam 1 large head of broccoli, 1 cup asparagus spears,  then saute in olive oil 3/4 cup onions,  3 cloves of garlic, 1 cup of diced mushrooms, 1 whole red yellow pepper, 1 whole tomato (optional) and 2 cups diced purple cabbage.

Evening snack; mixed fruit

Ongoing days

Slowly add your normal foods back to your diet, hopefully healthy foods! Continue to drink at least 1/2  of your body weight in ounces of water per day.  Be sure to include beans, whole grains, nuts and seeds with your daily dietary routine, they provide great health benefits.  Exercise must be a regular part of your daily routine.

This is a great time to keep the healthy eating going. variety is the key to being happy when eating very healthy. Use a variety of Beans, lentils, nuts and seeds and a few whole grains along with your vegetables to keep meals interesting. If eating meats keep them free range and organic lean cuts. Fish should always be wild caught and eggs should be free range organic eggs.

Aging Faster Than You Wish, Slow it Down

Be Youthful Later in Life!

I don’t want to age any faster than necessary and I am sure you don’t want to either. There is where the NutriBullet can make your health really benefit!

Did you know you have a profound affect on how quickly your body ages?  Every morning looking in the mirror can tell us how we are aging externally. The real issue is how you are aging internally. How well are your cells and ultimately your organs and glands holding up against the daily assault of free radicals, toxins, stress and nutritional deficiencies?  The idea is to slow down the aging process if we can.  There are things you can do to not only reduce the aging process but maybe even reverse it in some cases.

Can We Slow Down Aging, YES! The sooner in life you begin to live a life of wellness the younger your body can be as you get older.

So what does aging really mean? Technically, aging is a combination of all metabolic life activities, effects of exposure to toxins, microbial agents, nutrient deficiencies and their total combined effect over time on the body’s cells.

As part of life, we are exposed to micro-organisms, environmental toxins, drugs, emotional toxicities, unhealthy foods, nutrient deficiencies and stress, let’s call these “negative health catalyst”, or NHC. These NHCs have a direct impact on our cells ability to continue to replicate in a healthy state. NHCs can cause damage to the cell and even DNA in our cells. They do this in different ways. In one case they cause free radicals to form that can damage the cells and even the DNA in the cell to the point that the cell will begin to replicate itself in an unhealthy state.  In another way they lower our immune function to the point that the immune system is not healthy enough to stop the growth of bacteria, viruses, micro organisms and even mutated cells and the mutated cells can multiply to the point of disease. In another way they turn on the adverse health potential of certain genes to express themselves as disease and illness, but potentially the most damaging effect of these NHCs is their ability to shorten our telomeres and cause damage to our DNA through free radical damage to our cells.

What Causes Aging?

In my opiniot biggest causes of aging are:

What Are Telomeres?

Our genes are located on twisted, double-stranded molecules of DNA called chromosomes. At the ends of the chromosomes are stretches of DNA called telomeres, Telomeres are protective DNA-protein complexes, which protect our genetic data, make it possible for cells to divide and hold some secrets to how we age and get cancer. Think of the plastic caps on the end of your shoe laces. This is sort of what the telomeres look like. They keep the strands of chromosomes from unraveling. As the effects of NHCs advance our cellular aging the telomeres get shorter and shorter.   Once the telomeres get so short, the cell can no longer replicate and over time aging accelerates.

In 2009 three American scientists who discovered telomeres were awarded The 2009 Nobel Prize in Physiology of Medicine. Their work began a couple of decades earlier. What they discovered only enhances our belief that the way we live has an undeniable impact on the status of our health. Although this research certainly identifies the damage caused by the shortening of our telomeres , further research is underway to fully understand its role in life longevity and the advancement of disease and illness.

To strengthen our telomere’s we must increase the presence of the enzyme telomerase in our cells. Telomerase is an enzyme that is responsible for keeping telomeres healthy. As we age our bodies produce less and less telomerase thus we begin to age faster and faster. In addition the NHC’s also slow down the cellular production of telomerase.

How do we slow down the aging Process?

By living a lifestyle of wellness we greatly enhance our potential for slowing the aging process and having a life of vibrant health.  Recent studies even show that a lifestyle of wellness actually can increase the cellular production of telomerase and improve overall health. If we remove NHC’s and include nutrient dense foods (lots and veggies and fruits), pure water, relaxation, adequate sleep, health building exercise, fresh air, sunshine and emotional and spiritual balance, we can improve every facet of our health potential. You can in many cases trump genetic tendencies.  The way you live has such a powerful effect on your health that it literally can mean the difference between sudden death and a life of longevity with vibrant health.

At this point I would not recommend taking supplements or products specifically designed to increase telomerase or telomere length, its too earlier in their use to really know if they are safe and effective. Some studies show some of the products may increase other illnesses. Just stick with a health diet and lifestyle and let Mother Nature do her thing!

A Mysterious Superfood You Should Make a Part of Your Daily Routine!

Mysterious Superfood
Mysterious Superfood

In today’s world of exotic fruits, mushrooms and strange vegetables, it is easy to over look less sexy foods.  In the nutritional circles and functions I attend the buzz is around exotic fruits, herbs, vegetables and mushrooms such as Gojo Berry, Lucuma, Maca, Astragalus, Ho Shu Wu, Rishi and Chaga etc... These are just the tip of the iceberg in the über ( highest, elite ) super foods family that gets everyone’s attention.  All of these have powerful health restorative properties. However, natures most nutrient dense super food is sitting right in front of us everyday. Because it’s parent source is so common, it is over looked by many. You may not even know about it until now.

Many people eat it every week, however not in the form that provides super dense nutrition that can truly help restore health and in many cases reverse adverse health conditions.  In fact, it is so powerful it is used medicinally to treat high cholesterol, high urine calcium and diabetes.  So, have you got an idea what food I may be talking about. I’ll give you a hint; its tan, brown and black in its natural form, it is a staple for certain cultures and it can be made into flour, cheese, wine, beer, liquor and eaten whole.  Do you know what it is? It has a slightly sweet and nutty flavor, you can put it on almost any food or eat it by itself.

I have a client that is missing a few feet of intestine, 1/2 of their colon, 1 kidney, has COPD and is on oxygen most of the day, adrenal failure and heart issues. The past few months she has been eating this food in large quantities and for the first time in several years her health is improving. She was having reoccurring pneumonia and bronchitis and now her immune system is functioning at a much higher level. She can actually do light house work without the oxygen, and can enjoy the outdoors again. Her doctor was amazed that she is building health now previously he told her she would continue to get worse and eventually it would take her life.  This tells you just how powerful food is to our body.

What if I told you that the bran and the germ from rice is the single most nutrient dense food in the world.  Would you have guessed that rice bran and rice germ is the food I am talking about? Probably not.  It takes 20 to 30 pounds of brown rice to make one pound of the rice bran and rice germ.  Ounce for ounce no other single food has as deep and rich of a vitamin, mineral, essential fatty acid, enzymatic, phytonutrient and antioxidant content.

Rice bran and rice germ ( for brevity sake rice bran) is hypoallergenic and is gentle enough for even infants yet a super powerhouse of health ( in depth detail ) for adults!.  The bran and germ of the rice is where about 85% of the nutritional power of the rice kernel is stored. The bran part of rice is extremely nutrient dense. Only recently, technology has developed methods for stabilizing the healthy oils in rice bran and germ. An enzyme in the bran causes the oil in the bran to go rancid very quickly. Now the bran of the rice kernel can be removed and stored for a longer period without damaging the super nutrition contained in the bran part of the rice kernel.

Rice bran has many health promoting benefits as well as providing an abundant source of energy. Several studies have shown that rice bran has cholesterol lowering abilities, blood sugar stabilizing ability for type I and type II diabetics. Furthermore a *study stated that ” Diseases in which preventive and/or nutraceutical effects have been detected include: cancer, hyperlipidemia (high blood cholesterol), fatty liver, hypercalciuria ( high concentrates of calcium in the urine), kidney stones, and heart disease. In addition, rice-bran products may have potential applications as nutritional ingredients in the context of their utility in functional foods.” Source: Jariwalla RJ. California Institute for Medical Research, San Jose, CA, USA.

Stabilized rice bran is the new super natural health super food! Rice bran contains an amazing array of advanced nutrients and antioxidants which assist you in maintaining your overall health. The nutritional value of rice bran is vastly superior to other brans and works with your body naturally for optimal vibrant health.

Studies have shown rice bran has over 100 antioxidants & co-factors. Stabilized Rice bran has just about all the essential vitamins and minerals you would ever need for natural health maintenance, weight management and instant energy.

Rice bran is superior – it has an astounding quantity of other healthy nutrients such as phytosterols, polysaccharides, beta-sitosterol, natural fiber, Vitamin E complex, plus a large complement of B vitamins. Rice bran also boasts an array of essential vitamins and minerals, gamma oryzanol, plus it is a good source of Omega 3 & Omega 6.

Phytosterols and Sterolins (phytosterols glucosides) — These are natural phytonutrients with healthful properties that range from helping to fight free radicals, prevent cancer, reduce blood sugar and blood lipid levels, lower  cholesterol and ease menopausal  symptoms. Stabilized rice bran contains β-Sitosterol, Campesterol, Stigmasterol, Δ5-Avinasterol, Δ7-Stigmastenol, Sterol glucoside, Acylsterol glucoside  Oligoglycosylsterol, Gramisterol, Monoglycosylsterol, Dimethylsterol, Cellotetraosylsitosterol, Branosterol, Isofucosterol, Obtusifoliol, Sitostenol, Methylsterol, 28-Homosteasteronic  acids, β-Amyrin, 28-Homotyphasterol, Citrostadienol, and 6-Deoxycastasterone,

Calcium — which helps build strong bones, teeth and muscles; promotes healthy nervous system; has a calming effect on the nervous system; helps with proper functioning of the heart, muscles, and nervous system; and plays a role in maintaining normal blood pressure, regulating blood  clotting, preventing cancers of the digestive tract and  decreasing mood swings, food cravings, and the pain, tenderness and bloating associated with premenstrual syndrome.

Magnesium — which is an essential element for proper functioning of the nervous, muscular and cardiovascular systems. It also helps with nerve and muscle functioning, helps relieve cramps and PMS, aids in bone formation, regulates heartbeat and helps to normalize blood pressure.

Potassium — which helps to regulate fluid balance, heart rhythms and blood pressure and helps with mental function by sending oxygen to the brain. It is required for the proper functioning of the heart, kidneys, muscles, nerves, and digestive system.

Gamma Oryzanol Complex — this amazing anti-mutagenic group  includes Campesterol Trans-ferulate, Cycloartenol Trans-ferulate, Cycloartenol Cis-ferulate, Cycloeucalenol Trans-ferulate, Cycloeucalenol Cis-ferulate, Stigmasterol Trans-ferulate, 24-Methylenecycloartanol  Trans-ferulate, 24-Methylenecycloartanol Cis-ferulate, β-Sitosterol  Trans-ferulate, β-Sitosterol Cis-ferulate, β-Sitostenol Trans-ferulate,   β-Sitostenol Cis-ferulate, Stigmasterol Cis-ferulate, Stigmastenol  Cis-ferulate, Campesterol Cis-ferulate, Cycloartanol Trans-ferulate, Cycloartanol Cis-ferulate, Stigmastenol Trans-ferulate,  24-Methylcholesterol Trans-ferulate, and 24-Methylcholesterol Cis-ferulate. These help boost immune response, reduce inflammation, increase energy, metabolize glucose, regulate blood sugar, and more!

Polyphenols — including Ferulic acid, α-Lipoic acid, Methyl ferulate, ρ-Coumaric acid, ρ-Sinapic acid, Isovitexin, Proanthocyanidins. These have been shown to assist the immune system and to reduce the risk of  cancer and cardiovascular disease.

Metal Chelators — including Magnesium, Manganese, Phosphorous, Potassium and Inositol Hexaphosphate (IP6). Getting heavy metals out helps to make sure that antioxidants don’t “turn to the dark side” and become pro-oxidized free radicals.

Carotenoids — Very effective free radical scavengers including Lutein,  α-Carotene, β-Carotene, Lycopene, Zeaxanthine, and Crytocyanthine.

B-Vitamins & Vitamin-like substances — including Thiamin, Riboflavin, Niacin, Pantothenic acid, Pyridoxine, Betaine, Dimethyl glycine, Inositol, Biotin, Choline, Folic acid, and Phytates. These are known to help immune function lower blood pressure, lower cholesterol, and increase coronary artery capacity.

Phospholipids — including Phosphatidylserine, PhosphatidylCholine, Phosphatidylethanolamine, Lysophophatidylcholine, Lysophosphatidylethanolamine. Phospholipids helps support the growth and renewal of cellular membranes, forming an important barrier to filter toxins out. They also act as cellular antioxidants when free radical “bullets” try to penetrate the cell. Phospholipids are also thought to prevent depletion of the   neurotransmitter choline, improving mental focus, brain function, and both  mental and physical stamina.

Everyday Super Foods You Should Be Eating

Super Foods For Your Health!

We always hear about a number of exotic foods with super food status; however they are not always easy to find and if you can find them the cost may be prohibitive.  I could list many everyday super foods, however for the sake of brevity, let’s look at  10 of the most nutrient dense everyday super foods that are very available  in most grocery and or healthy oriented food stores, such as Whole Foods and Earth Fair. Again this my opinion, I could make a list of at least a few dozen foods with super healthy potential. When possible select organic foods.

Swiss chard

Swiss chard is very rich in a broad spectrum of nutrients.  Chard belongs to the same family as beets and spinach and shares a similar taste profile: it has the bitterness of beet greens and the slightly salty flavor of spinach leaves. Chard is truly a nutritional superstar. It can be used just like spinach. Use the tender smaller leafs raw in salads. You can wilt, steam or boil the larger leafs so they are tender. On the larger leafs remove the stalk center, it can be a little tougher. Learn more about Swiss chards many health benefits.

Butter Nut Squash (winter squashes)

If you have never tried this vegetable you have really missed out on a very nutrient rich and very tasty vegetable. Although there are many different types of winter squash such as spaghetti, delicata, hubbard, sweet dumpling, acorn and butter cup, the butter nut is one of my favorites. It tastes very much like a sweet potato however it has much less sugar content.  For those that need to watch their blood sugar it is an excellent choice. Winter squash is as an excellent source of vitamin A (in the form of beta-carotene), a very good source of vitamin C, potassium, dietary fiber and manganese. In addition, winter squash emerged as a good source of folate, omega-3 fatty acids, vitamin B1, copper, vitamin B6, niacin-vitamin B3 and pantothenic acid. Winter squashes offer many health benefits and are very easy to store. Learn more here.

Spinach

Researchers have identified at least 13 different flavonoid compounds in spinach that function as antioxidants and as anti-cancer agents. (Many of these substances fall into a technical class of flavonoids known as methylenedioxyflavonol glucuronides.) Glucuronides are a very important part of our detoxing pathways. The anticancer properties of these spinach flavonoids have been sufficiently impressive to prompt researchers to create specialized spinach extracts that could be used in controlled studies. These spinach extracts have been shown to slow down cell division in stomach cancer cells (gastric adenocarcinomas), and in studies on laboratory animals, to reduce skin cancers (skin papillomas). A study on adult women living in New England in the late 1980s also showed intake of spinach to be inversely related to incidence of breast cancer.  Click here for more data about spinach

Broccoli  (cruciferous family)

Broccoli is a great addition to our diets. It can bet enjoyed raw or cooked. Broccoli is a powerful anti-inflammatory and detoxing food. Most vegetables are not considered to be good sources of omega 3 fatty acids however broccoli has enough of them that it can give you the many health benefits of omega 3 fatty acids. Broccoli contains compounds that are necessary for our body’s detoxing pathways. In addition it is rich in many vitamins, minerals, fiber and phytonutrients. Many studies have shown broccoli to give protection against cancers and it can help in the metabolism of vitamin d due to its high content of vitamin k. Learn more about broccoli here.

Avocado

Although avocados are very creamy due to its abundance of heart healthy monounsaturated fats, it is also a very rich source of fiber, vitamin k, potassium, folate, vitamin b6, vitamin c and cooper. It is also very rich in antioxidants. Avocados may offer a delicious dietary strategy for the prevention of oral cancer. Phytonutrients in Hass avocados, the most readily available of the more than 500 varieties of avocados grown worldwide, target multiple signaling pathways, increasing the amount of free radicals (reactive oxygen species) within pre-cancerous and cancerous human oral cell lines, that leads to their death, but cause no harm to normal cells. ? Semin Cancer Biol. 2007 May 17. Earlier research by UCLA scientists also indicates that Hass avocados may inhibit the growth of prostate cancer as well. When analyzed, Hass avocados were found to contain the highest content of lutein among commonly eaten fruits as well as measurable amounts of related carotenoids (zeaxanthin, alpha-carotene, and beta-carotene). Lutein accounted for 70% of the measured carotenoids, and the avocado also contained significant quantities of vitamin E. J Nutr Biochem. 2005 Jan;16(1):23-30. Strawberries

Strawberries are the most popular fruit in the world and it’s not just due to its wonderful unique flavor. Strawberries are rich in many nutrients and phytonutrients including vitamin c, manganese, fiber, iodine, potassium, folate, vitamin b2, vitamin b6, vitamin b5 and are source of omega 3 fatty acids. Strawberries’ unique phenol content makes them a heart-protective fruit, an anti-cancer fruit, and an anti-inflammatory fruit, all rolled into one. Learn more about strawberries here.

Dark Chocolate

I am a chocolate nut, really I am. I am so glad dark chocolate is so healthy. Dark chocolate is one of the richest sources of flavonoids and has one of the highest antioxidant ratings of any foods. Dark chocolate also contains another compound, epicatechin, which research shows to be a powerful cellular stimulator of protective compounds which may be prompting the cells to defend themselves. It is richer in antioxidant power than green tea and red wine.  Dark chocolate provides brain protection, heart protection, lowers blood pressure, improves skin health and bone health and is anti-inflammatory.  Dark chocolate and or raw cacao has much less caffeine than coffee or tea. With all the protection of dark chocolate you still need to be aware of the calories. Also the chocolate found in candies, ice cream and other food preparations may not offer the same health benefits. Chocolate with added sugars is unhealthy. Look for 100% organic dark chocolate or raw cacao.  I am not saying eat all of the chocolate you want, it is high in calories, however consumed correctly it is awesome for your health!

Do not consume milk when eating chocolate; it may interfere with nutrient absorption. The fat in chocolate comes from cocoa butter and is made up of equal amounts of oleic acid (a heart-healthy monounsaturated fat also found in olive oil), stearic and palmitic acids. Stearic and palmitic acids are forms of saturated fat. You may know that saturated fats are linked to increases in LDL-cholesterol and the risk for heart disease. But, research shows that stearic acid appears to have a neutral effect on cholesterol, neither raising nor lowering it. Although palmitic acid does affect cholesterol levels, it only makes up one-third of the fat calories in chocolate. If you really want to know all the benefits of chocolate read my friend David Wolf’s book “Naked Chocolate”.

Nuts & Seeds

Nuts and seeds improve brain health, heart health, reduce high cholesterol, and are anti-inflammatory, can be high in antioxidant value and provide detoxing power. Nuts and seeds are very rich in fiber, minerals, phytonutrients, and heart healthy oils and can be a rich source of antioxidant power. Nuts and seeds can be used and eaten in a variety of ways, such as a snack or in salads and turned into nut butters. You will find them raw and roasted. Raw is better if you are looking for optimal nutritional intake. Many people soak their nuts before eating to remove the external protein coating that can make digestion a little more difficult for our bodies. Nuts and seeds are very satiating and help curb hunger. In fact many studies have shown that people who regularly consume 1 to 2 ounces of nuts and seeds per day seem to lose weight and keep it off.

Nuts and seeds contain mostly monounsaturated oils and smaller amounts of polyunsaturated oils.  Walnuts and flax seeds (must be ground before eating) contain a large percentage of anti-inflammatory omega 3 fatty acids.  Sunflower seeds are a rich source of many vitamins and minerals.  Brazil nuts contain several times the DRI of selenium, a very powerful antioxidant mineral with anti-cancer properties. Pumpkin seeds are an equally healthful choice with ¼-cup of kernels boasting more than twice the omega-3 of a four-ounce serving of salmon while being an excellent source of magnesium. While the Flax seed has long been recognized as a very popular health food, the Chia seed is now being recognized for its high nutrient content, in particular an excellent source of omega 3’s.   Almonds are a wonderful source of copper, magnesium and phosphorous and 6 grams of protein per one-ounce serving. The June 2004 issue of the Journal of Agriculture and Food Chemistry reported that pecans contain the highest antioxidant capacity of all nuts.

Researches revealed that people who regularly consume nuts have lower risk of cardiovascular disease. The Iowa Women’s Healthy Study found that women who include nuts at least 4 times a week on their daily diet are 40% less likely reduce the risk of heart attack.  A study conducted by Harvard School of Public Health and Loma Linda University yielded very similar results. Naturally, the health benefits are not only exclusive to women, in a 2002 research in Physician’s Health Study of male participants, the findings showed that men who consumed nuts regularly 2 or more times per week had reduced the risks of heart attack.

The famous Seventh Day Adventists study followed more than 30,000 church members over a 12-year period. The results showed that even in this healthy-living, largely vegetarian group, those who ate nuts at least five times per week cut their risk of dying from coronary heart disease (CHD) by 48 percent, compared with those who ate nuts less than once weekly. They also cut their risk of a nonfatal heart attack by 51 percent.

In a study involving more than 3,000 African-American men and women, those who consumed nuts at least five times a week cut their risk of dying from CHD by 44 percent, compared with those who ate nuts less than once weekly.

The results of the 14-year Nurses’ Health Study—which involved more than 86,000 women—indicate that women who consume more than five ounces of nuts weekly will cut their risk of CHD by 35 percent, compared with those who eat less than one ounce per month.  And, the 17-year Physicians’ Health Study involving more than 21,000 men found that those who consumed nuts at least twice a week cut their risk of sudden cardiac death by 53 percent, compared with those who rarely ate nuts.

Just remember nuts and seeds are high in calories due to the abundance of heart healthy oils, be careful to not over consume them.  Because of their wide array of nutrients it is better to include a variety of them in your dietary routine.

The Allium Family

Garlic, onions, leeks and chives contain flavonoids that stimulate the production of glutathione, one of the body’s most powerful antioxidants. Glutathione enhances elimination of toxins and carcinogens, putting the Allium family of vegetables at the top of the list for foods that can help prevent cancer.  For maximum nutritional value mash, mince or chop them and let sit for 5 minutes before consuming. This allows air to activate some of the healthy compounds they contain.

Here are just a few benefits from members of this family. Lowers total cholesterol (but raises HDL—”good”—cholesterol), lessens the risk of atherosclerosis (hardening of the arteries), lowers blood pressure, reduces the risk of blood clots (cause of the majority of strokes and heart attacks), destroys infection-causing viruses and bacteria, reduces the risk of certain cancers, in particular, stomach cancers, produces more “natural killer” cells in the blood to fight tumors and infections, helps fight against neurological diseases such as Alzheimer’s and enhances detoxification by reducing toxins.

Sprouts

Sprouts are edible seeds that are germinated. Most seeds, nuts, pulses, beans and grains can be sprouted. Sprouted alfalfa, broccoli, chickpeas, kidney beans, fenugreek seeds, wheat and barley are popular for their medicinal and nutritional properties. The many health benefits of sprouts result from the process of sprouting and the composition of sprouts. Sprouts can add a nutty and earthy flavor and a crunchy texture to salads and sandwiches.

Sprouts are a rich source of antioxidants, vitamins A, C and E and are a good source of selenium. They also contain calcium, phosphorous, magnesium, iron, zinc, folate and vitamin B. They are low in sodium but high in potassium. Sprouted legumes like peanuts, soy beans and peanuts have complete proteins. They are a good source of fiber and are rich in life promoting enzymes, oxygen and chlorophyll.  Do not underestimate the health promoting properties of these wonderful, raw life giving foods.

For optimal health there are many very healthy commonly available foods you should make a part of your diet.  Variety is the key. Be adventuresome with the foods you select. Try something new! There are hundreds of healthy vegetables, fruits , beans, grains and nuts and seeds to enjoy.  Eat healthy, eat a variety and enjoy them with friends.

Anti-Aging, Live Longer and Healthier

Did you know you have a profound affect on how quickly your body ages?  Every morning looking in the mirror can tell us how we are aging externally. The real issue is how you are aging internally. How well are your cells and ultimately your organs and glands holding up against the daily assault of free radicals, toxins, stress and nutritional deficiencies?  The idea is to slow down the aging process if we can.  There are a few things you can do to not only reduce the aging process but maybe even reverse it in some cases.

How Can We Slow Down Aging?

My opinion is that the biggest causes of aging are:

What Are Telomeres?

In this Illustration The Red Caps Are Telomeres

If we remove NHC’s and include nutrient dense foods, pure water, relaxation, adequate sleep, health building exercise, fresh air, sunshine and emotional and spiritual balance, we can improve every facet of our health potential. You can in many cases trump genetic tendencies.  The way you live has such a powerful effect on your health that it literally can mean the difference between sudden death and a life of longevity with vibrant health.
